Workshops

Darkroom (Part 3)

In this darkroom workshop this time we created stencil in which we overlaid it on some photographic paper then exposed an image onto it, the left over cut-out was then placed on the paper where the light didn’t expose it then another negative was exposed on the paper, with the result being two negative exposed at different points on the paper.

The stencil could be anything, shapes, words, patterns etc. as it is hard to have both parts of the stencil line up this would often create a white line around parts of the image which can create a 3d perspective.

Due to my past experience in the darkroom I didn’t find this workshop challenging, due to my idea the workshop also didn’t help further it, however the idea of merging two images together onto one piece of paper is similar to what I will be doing with video.

Editing

For our first workshop we were tasked with choosing public domain footage and change it into something different through editing. This is similar to what I did last semester with my re-dubbing series as well as what I will be doing for this project.

For the video I made I experimented with my theme of creating a narrative between two different films for this workshop I used ‘Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe’ and ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians’ I used these two films due to their similar names, however due to the limited time I had during the workshop the narrative was loose as I only had time to look through the first 10 minutes or so of each film and even less time to find other sounds to fill in the silence between character dialogue as I would use free backing tracks.

We used Premiere Pro to do the editing on, which is a program that I have experience with having used it on my video project from last term as well as other projects.

I found this workshop more of an experiment of how I could have two films interact with each other rather than an editing exercise due to my familiarity with the Premiere Pro.

Collage
In this workshop we created a collage using old magazines and newspapers, for my collage I made an advert using a product I found in one of the magazine and then cut out various headlines to make it seem like they were reviews promoting the product.

The process of creating a collage is similar to what I did last term as well as what I am doing for this project as they both involve taking content from one source and transforming it into something else.

I have also done similar projects before such as in my graphic design lessons back at college, so the process of creating a collage was familiar to me

While I found the process of creating a collage enjoyable it didn’t have an impact on myself of my project due to my experience with creating them in the past.
